Nintendo: It’s Dangerous To Go Alone! Take This.

Generally I like MG’s posts. While there’s almost always a fair amount of “look at me, I’m right” in his posts, he generally posts some good ideas that are wonderful food for thought. I didn’t get that vibe with this piece.

tl;dr? Nintendo should make a $99 console that plays classic and retro-styled games for $5-$15 a pop. All the games would be digital, with purchases made through some sort of online shop.

No.

Looking at the market, I can’t see any huge demand for this. $99 android consoles (which can -illegally- play old Nintendo titles) are an afterthought and the Wii (which can play both classic Nintendo titles (for a fee) as well as “new” (relatively speaking) games) has had it’s moment in the sun. If Nintendo wants even a fraction of those 100 million Wii users to look their way, they’re going  to have to either a) sell them what’s popular or b) sell them something they didn’t know they wanted.

People want to be excited about their newest gadget purchase. A $99 retrobox does nothing to get the “core” Nintendo fan or gamer excited. If the core gamers aren’t excited, there are no or very few early adopters. If there’s no early adopters, there’s no buzz. If there’s no buzz, then that means Nintendo’s going to have another box sitting on retailer’s shelves collecting dust.

I agree that Nintendo’s IP are their strongest asset. From Super Mario to Pokemon to Zelda to F-Zero to Animal Crossing, they are deep and varied. Still, this is not the best way to leverage them.
